MAKING SURE KIDS ARE HEALTHY & PREPARED FOR SCHOOL
Above: Anamaria Ortego, 8, and Yusely Donis, 7, at the Wheatley Arts Academy, June 2009The early years of grade school are important in a child's life. The best indicator for success in school is reading at grade level by the third grade. Making Connections and Jefferson County Public Schools are partnering to make sure Wheatley students get a piece of that success.
About 66 students attended the Wheatley Arts Academy this summer, all of whom have been recommended by their teachers and each of whom will get an individual learning plan.
The academy curriculum includes the Blue Apple Players, who teach kids how to tell stories in a physical way. In addition, Jefferson County 4-H, the Louisville Free Public Library, River City Drum Corp, and Los Monitos are leading activities. Field trips, dental screenings, "family fun nights", story-craft sessions are all included.
